About Us and Contact

Kit Boats Co. is the creation of Brandon Davis (Turnpoint Design) and Josh Colvin (Small Craft Advisor magazine), who have previous collaboarated on boat designs such as  Scout, Skate, SCAMP (John Welsford design) the Portage Pram and the new Old Salt 15.

In addition to designing many successful boats and kits, Brandon has worked for America's Cup teams and cruised and raced sailboats extensively worldwide—including completing the Race to Alaska.

Josh has written boating articles for nearly three decades—including the testing and reviewing of almost 200 different boats. He has also owned a marine hardware company and cruised small boats extensively.

Kit Boats Co. was launched to offer amatuer boatbuilders a single source of what we think the are the best kits on the market. Each kit has been designed with ease-of-build and efficiency in mind—with puzzle joints, scribe marks and tabs for locating components accurately. Build manuals are available in printed form, but all designs also feature online manuals that can be updated in real time with questions, photos, and builder suggestions. These "living documents" get better and more detailed as time goes on.

We also provide a Time & Difficulty rating with each design on the website, to give builders a sense of the scope of the project. Although none of our boats is nearly as complicated as a tradtional boat built from plans, we rate difficulty as either EASY / MODERATE / or COMPLEX.

The kits themselves are cut only from marine plywood—all rated with the BS-1088 stamp to guarantee high quality. While all of our boats are made primarily of plywood, some kits will require limted hardwood for trim, cleats or other components. We don't provide this hard wood, but it will be itemized in the manual or bill of materials.

Similarly, we don't sell running or standing rigging, hardware or many other accessories, but for our most popular sailing designs we do offer the masts and class sails. We can also suggest hardware and provide sources.

We also offer competitively priced fiberglass and epoxy kits for each of designs that contain the necessary fiberglass cloth, epoxy, tape, fillers and other materials to build the boat.
